There is a test I sometimes give clients during our first consultation. I ask them to describe, in a single sentence, the most stylish person they have ever encountered in real life — not on a runway, not in a magazine, but in a room, on a street, at a dinner table.

Almost without exception, what they describe is not a dress. It is not a suit, or a coat, or a pair of trousers. It is a detail. A scarf tied in a particular way. A pair of earrings that caught the light. A belt that transformed something simple into something considered. A bag so perfectly chosen it seemed to belong to no other person on earth.

This is the power of accessories — and it is consistently, magnificently underestimated.

Why Accessories Are Not an Afterthought

In the hierarchy of getting dressed, most people work from the outside in: they choose the clothes first, and then — if time and energy permit — they add the accessories. A necklace grabbed from a drawer. A bag picked up because it is nearest the door. Shoes selected for comfort rather than intention.

The result is a look that is dressed, but not styled. Complete in the technical sense, but missing the quality that makes a person truly memorable: the sense that every element has been chosen.

After thirty-four years working as a personal stylist, I can tell you with certainty that the difference between a good outfit and an extraordinary one is almost always found in the accessories. They are not the finishing touch. They are the signature.

What Accessories Actually Do

Before we talk about how to choose them, it is worth understanding what accessories are actually doing — because it is more than decoration.

They direct the eye. A striking necklace draws attention upward, to the face. A bold belt defines the waist and creates structure. A beautiful shoe anchors an outfit and gives it weight. Accessories are the punctuation of a look: they tell the eye where to go, and in doing so, they shape how you are perceived.

They communicate identity. Clothes, particularly at the luxury level, can be somewhat anonymous — a beautifully cut trouser suit is a beautifully cut trouser suit. The accessories you choose with it are what make it yours. They signal taste, personality, cultural reference, and intention in a way that clothing alone rarely can.

They adapt and multiply. A wardrobe built on well-chosen accessories is a wardrobe of extraordinary versatility. The same silk dress becomes three different looks depending on whether it is worn with a structured gold cuff and heels, a woven leather belt and flat sandals, or a cashmere wrap and understated pearl drops. Accessories are the most efficient investment in a wardrobe — and often the most enduring.

Not all accessories carry equal weight. In my work with clients, there are certain categories I return to again and again as the foundations of a truly considered wardrobe.

Shoes

Nothing changes the register of a look more dramatically than footwear. A heel adds formality and elongates the line. A loafer in a fine leather speaks of quiet confidence and ease. A beautifully crafted flat sandal — particularly one made by a Roman artisan — carries a sense of effortless luxury that no logo can replicate. I always encourage clients to invest here before almost anywhere else: shoes are seen from a distance, remembered up close, and felt throughout the day.

Bags

A bag is the one accessory that accompanies you everywhere — and as such, it speaks constantly on your behalf. The question I ask clients is not “which bag is most beautiful?” but “which bag tells the right story for your life?” A structured tote in a warm cognac leather. A compact evening clutch in silk or beaded fabric. A softer, relaxed silhouette for weekends and travel. Each serves a different purpose, and the most considered wardrobes have at least one of each.

Scarves and Silk

This is perhaps the most underused accessory in the modern wardrobe, and one I find endlessly versatile. Tied at the neck, knotted on a bag, wrapped loosely over the shoulders, threaded through the hair — a silk scarf in the right colours transforms almost any look. Italy, of course, produces some of the world’s finest silk; in Rome, I know exactly where to find pieces that will last a lifetime and improve with age.

Jewellery

The question with jewellery is never “how much?” but “how intentional?” One extraordinary piece — a sculptural gold cuff, a pair of drop earrings in a stone that echoes your colouring, a necklace with genuine provenance — outperforms a collection of things that mean nothing. I work with clients to identify the pieces that belong to them, that feel like a second skin rather than a costume.

Belts

Consistently overlooked, consistently transformative. A belt does something structural that no amount of good tailoring can fully replicate: it creates a waist, defines a proportion, and gives even the most relaxed of looks a sense of intention. In fine leather, in a width and colour chosen for your specific body and wardrobe, a belt is one of the highest-return investments in style.

The leather artisans, the silk weavers, the jewellers working in ateliers that have occupied the same addresses for generations — these are not shops you find by searching online. They are relationships, built over decades, that I am able to share with my clients.

How to Begin: A Practical Approach

Begin with an honest audit. Lay out everything: every bag, every pair of shoes, every scarf and piece of jewellery. Ask yourself, of each item: does this feel like me? Does this work with at least three things I own? Does this elevate, or merely accompany?

What remains after that edit is your foundation. What is missing is your opportunity.
